WHAT IS MLD AND THE BENEFITS ?

"The dance along the artery

The circulation of the lymph

Are figured in the drift of stars..."

T S Elliot

Lymph Drainage Massage is a method of mechanically encouraging the movement of fluids through the tissue. The therapist mimics the movement and action of the lymph within the body.

The fingers and hands are used to give repetitive light movements on the skin at a slow rhythm and a very light pressure. This type of movement stimulates the lymphatic vessels to contract in a more organised way.

The skin is moved lightly in different directions and this stretches the microfilaments that connect the smallest initial lymphatic vessel found just under the skin. This encourages the lymph vessels to contract and affects lymph vessels deeper in the body. Lymph nodes are stimulated, this in turn has a positive effect on the immune system.

The main function of the lymphatic system is detoxification and disposal of metabolic waste. This waste includes toxins which accumulate and cause lowered energy levels, fatigue and mood swings.

MLD is particularly beneficial when there is lymph congestion and stagnation. Stimulation of the system encourages clearing of waste materials and encourages the immune system to improve. Many conditions can respond favourably including those involving fluid retention and swelling of the tissue; for example arthritis, sinus problems and when there are sprains and injuries MLD is a very useful adjunct to Physiotherapy.

Including Manual Lymph Drainage as part of a Detoxification Program can reduce fluid retention and cellulite. MLD can also improve long term conditions such as ME MS migraine and tension headaches.

Many surgeons recommend MLD post-operatively to reduce swelling more quickly and promote healing, and Manual Lymph Drainage is often sort by those having liposuction and cosmetic surgery on the body and face.

StudentsToday, one of the most important areas where Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is essential is in the treatment for oedema and is an important component of CPT Complex Physical Therapy when treating lymphoedema.

Treatments also have a beneficial action on the nervous system and so can be excellent for stress and stress related problems.
